Nigerian Singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko popularly known as Simi isn’t just belting out anthems, she’s championing an important cause: women’s freedom of choice. In a recent interview on the “Tea With Tea” podcast, the mother of one shed her perspective on feminism, unveiling its deeper meaning for her.
Simi’s feminism boils down to a single powerful principle: genuine choice, free from societal pressures, fear, or manipulation. “If you want to be a stay-at-home mom, a CEO, or a pop star – own your choice,” she emphasizes. This autonomy, this right to forge one’s own path, lies at the heart of her advocacy.
Simi’s voice on this issue isn’t new. Throughout her career, she’s consistently spoken up for equality and challenged sexist narratives. Remember the 2023 “Big Brother Naija” controversy? When a contestant spewed misogynistic remarks, Simi didn’t mince words, calling for consequences and highlighting the absurdity of such views.
But her activism goes beyond fiery moments. Back in 2020, a series of tweets laid bare the everyday struggles women face in a male-dominated world. “You sweat blood for a spot at a table that disrespects your sweat,” she wrote, capturing the frustration and resilience of countless women striving for respect in male-dominated spheres.
Simi’s music and her message resonate because they touch on a universal truth: every woman deserves the right to choose her own path, free from shackles and expectations. Through her art and her voice, she continues to remind us that genuine empowerment lies in choosing for ourselves, not against each other.
