WATCH | Terry Crews’ shout-out to Mzansi & Tiwa Savage makes history at the 2018 MTV EMAs

Tiwa Savage made history at the EMAs last night.

From video screens projecting images of “living portraits” and paint flowing – to this year’s host getting spray-painted live on stage, the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards were high on artistic theatrics in a tribute to this year’s location, the culturally rich Spanish city of Bilbao.

Women ruled the EMAs

There is no doubt that women ruled the roost at this year’s EMAs.

Tiwa Savage made history by becoming the first African female to hold up the Best African Act trophy since its inception at the awards 13 years ago while Havana star Camila Cabello took home the lioness’ share of the awards with a hefty four trophies.

“It’s a huge moment, it is history. I am so excited and thankful to my fans for supporting me,” said Tiwa in an exclusive interview after she was named the winner, beating off stiff competition from SA’s pop princess Shekhinah.

“(Tiwa) is truly deserving of this award which is an affirmation of how consistent, commitment and hard work leads to success,” said executive vice president and managing director for Viacom International Media Networks Africa, Alex Okosi.

 Nicki Minaj’s opening performance was LIT 

Bilbao was never ready when Nicki made a bold entrance as fireworks rained to reveal the Queen of Rap hidden behind a suspended curtained platform. Nicki performed Good Form, the hit sing from her latest album Queen as the night’s opening number followed by Woman Like Me, her collab with Little Mix. Nicki also took home the awards for Best Hip-Hop and Best Look on the night

Janet Jackson proves at 52, she’s still got!

Janet gave an emotionally-charged acceptance speech as she was honoured as a Global Icon.

“I feel moved to speak for women whose voices have been stifled. I am one of those women, women who have been gagged, both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, women who have been intimidated, women who have lived in fear.”

Earlier on in the evening the pop legend showed she has no intention of slowing down, performing a medley of hits including her latest, Made For Now, as well as, Rhythm Nation and All For You.
